What does the Master of Health Administration cover?

The Master of Health Administration is a 12-unit graduate degree that covers key organisational management principles through the lens of health care. The breadth of study and the high level of strategic thinking within the units will see you prepared to lead and collaborate within a variety of organisations in the health sector.

Throughout the course, you’ll complete assessments integrated with real-world practice, and expand your learning through collaboration and discussion with peers. You’ll gain expertise in the microeconomic approach to resource allocation and management, as well as skills in implementing health care improvement projects in clinical settings.

By studying online through the Monash School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, you’ll benefit from our partnership with leading health organisations. Monash Online also has strong links to The Alfred Hospital, part of the Alfred Research Alliance precinct in the heart of Melbourne.

Entry level 1 – 72 points to complete. Duration: 2 years part time.

An Australian undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline* with at least a credit (60%) average,

AND a minimum of two years of relevant management experience**

*Relevant cognate disciplines include; medical, nursing, allied health, (other health related degree e.g. chiropractic, psychology, public health, environmental health, paramedic, imaging (radiology, nuclear medicine), biomedical engineering, dietetics/nutrition, pharmacy, social work, medical science/biomedical science/immunology, health science, laboratory science, science, and health economics); or economics, law, or business

**Relevant management experience in the field of health and public health administration in the health industry, e.g. government, policy, provider such as hospital, clinic, or non-government organisation.

Entry level 2 – 48 points to complete. Duration: 1.4 years part-time

A Monash University Graduate Certificate of Health Administration (M4005) with at least a pass (50%) average.

Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae (CV), or a statement from employer to substantiate period of employment.

The Master of Health Administration is not currently accepting international applications.
English requirements

Applicants must meet the English language requirements.

What's the difference between Public Health and Health Administration?

Meet your academic team

Professor Susannah Ahern

Professor Ahern is a medical administrator and academic in health services research and management at Monash University. As the Head of the Clinical Outcomes Data Reporting and Research Program at Monash University, she is the Monash Academic Lead for six national clinical quality registries, and coordinates and teaches into the Master of Health Administration course.

Professor Peter Bradford

Dr Bradford has a medical degree, a Masters in Public Health, and Fellowships in two Colleges relating to Medical and Hospital Management. He has had 35 year career, most recently as Executive Director Clinical Governance and Medical Services at Melbourne Health (The Royal Melbourne Hospital) and prior to that in similar roles in remote, rural, outer metropolitan, and teaching hospitals in Victoria and the Northern Territory.

Associate Professor Moira McInerney

Associate Professor Moira McInerney lectures on financial management in Monash University’s Master of Health program. She also serves as Executive Officer for Ophthalmology New Zealand. Moira’s career spans key leadership roles, including State Manager in diagnostic imaging, General Manager in cardiology, and CEO positions in ophthalmology across Australia and New Zealand. Notably, as CEO of Auckland Eye, she led the commissioning of Oasis Surgical. She also consults widely in healthcare management across both countries and has led research at QUT, advising Fiji’s Ministry of Health on Customer Service Standards. Recently, Moira helped develop the “Finance for Non-Financial Managers” micro-credential course for the Australasian College of Health Service Managers. Her qualifications include a BA in Psychology, an MBA in Health, Certified Health Executive (CHE) status, and Fellowship of ACHSM. Her research focuses on private equity’s growing role in private healthcare and its effects on service delivery and patient outcomes.

Dr Margaret Way

Dr Margaret Way is currently the Director of Safety, Quality and Improvement at Barwon Health in Victoria. She was an inaugural recipient of a Victorian Quality Council Travelling Fellowship and established the Clinical Governance Units at Austin Health and Alfred Health in Victoria and the Innovation, Quality, Research and Education (IQRE) Directorate at the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service in Queensland.

Associate Professor Chris Moran

Associate Professor Chris Moran has a medical degree in Northern Ireland, physician training (with a specialisation in geriatric medicine) in Melbourne, and completed his PhD at Monash University. He is currently a clinical academic in geriatric medicine at both Alfred Health, as well as the School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine (Monash University) in Health Services Research. He is the course co-director of the Master of Health Administration (alongside Professor Cathy Mihalopoulos). He is also a unit coordinator of the unit Case Study in health services management.

Dr Zahra Aziz

Dr Zahra Aziz is a Senior Lecturer and Head of Online Education within the School of Public Health & Preventive Medicine. Zahra is an accomplished educator, having received numerous grants and awards for innovations in education. Her research focuses on the effective delivery of educational programs and scholarship of online learning and teaching. She has led the advancement of intercultural and inter-professional education research nationally and internationally. Zahra has extensive teaching experience in the tertiary sector, teaching in a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. She is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
