What does the Graduate Certificate of Health Administration cover?

The Graduate Certificate of Health Administration offers a pathway into the field of health care administration under the guidance of industry leaders and expert health practitioners. Offered by our distinguished School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, students will have the opportunity to choose and explore a combination of topics, such as fundamentals of health system design, the health policy process, clinical leadership, safety and quality improvement, health law principles, and financial management. You’ll also expand your knowledge and competencies for managerial decision-making in the health care sector.

If you have your sights set on a Master of Health Administration, the Graduate Certificate provides an entry into further study. Whether you want to pivot into a career in health or leadership, or build on your existing knowledge, this course prepares you to revolutionise systems of health management.

You must complete four of the 6 core units of the Master in Health Administration, providing a chance to expand your knowledge in managerial and decision-making practices necessary for a future in health-care administration.

Leading and managing in public health and healthcare

Developing health systems

Safety and quality in healthcare

Healthcare and financial management

Introduction to health law principles

An Australian undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline* with at least a pass (50%) average,

AND a minimum of one to two years of relevant industry/management experience**

*Relevant cognate disciplines include; medical, nursing, allied health, (other health related degree e.g. chiropractic, psychology, public health, environmental health, paramedic, imaging (radiology, nuclear medicine), biomedical engineering, dietetics/nutrition, pharmacy, social work, medical science/biomedical science/immunology, health science, laboratory science, science, and health economics); or economics, law, or business

**Relevant work experience in the field of health and public health administration in the health industry, e.g. government, policy, provider such as hospital, clinic, or non-government organisation.

The Graduate Certificate of Health Administration is not currently accepting international applications.
English requirements

Applicants must meet the English language requirements.

Minimum entrance requirements apply for admission to Monash University Australia.

Extra Requirements

Applicants require a curriculum vitae (CV), relevant work experience or a statement from employer to substantiate period of employment.

Pathways to a master's degree

You can graduate with a Graduate Certificate of Health Administration in approximately 0.7 years part-time accelerated, after completing 4 units (12 credit points).

You can also continue studying after completing approximately:

  • 1.4 years part-time accelerated, 8 units (48 credit points total), and you’ll receive a Graduate Diploma of Health Administration; or
  • 2 years part-time accelerated, 12 units (72 credit points total), and you’ll receive a Master of Health Administration

Professor Susannah Ahern

Professor Ahern is a medical administrator and academic in health services research and management at Monash University. As the Head, Clinical Outcomes data Reporting and Research Program at Monash University, she is the Monash Academic Lead for six national clinical quality registries, and coordinates and teaches into the Master of Health Administration course.

Professor Peter Bradford

Dr Bradford has a medical degree, a Masters in Public Health, and Fellowships in two Colleges relating to Medical and Hospital Management. He has had 35 year career, most recently as Executive Director Clinical Governance and Medical Services at Melbourne Health (The Royal Melbourne Hospital) and prior to that in similar roles in remote, rural, outer metropolitan, and teaching hospitals in Victoria and the Northern Territory.
